Spiced Orange Mocktail: a star anise and chilli soda for cafes

↓ Jump to recipe

Quick answer

The Spiced Orange Mocktail combines 2 tbsp Swa Orange Mint syrup with soda and 1/4 cup of a cooled star anise, dry red chilli and jaggery brew, served over ice in a tall glass. The brew takes 20 minutes and can be made ahead; each serve is built in about 30 seconds.

Why does this recipe work?

The syrup is made from oranges sourced from Rajasthan with dried mint, so the orange stays recognisable even with spice around it. The brew adds warmth and a slow chilli finish, which keeps the drink from tasting like plain orange soda.

Where does it fit on a cafe menu?

The brew is the only prep step, so batch it before service and keep it chilled. After that the drink is a simple build of syrup, soda, brew and ice, which suits a cafe counter or a busy brunch shift. It also works as a winter or monsoon alternative to a standard iced drink.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the spiced brew take?

About 20 minutes of simmering after the water comes to a boil, plus cooling time to room temperature. It can be made in a larger batch ahead of service.

Does this mocktail contain preservatives?

Swa Orange Mint syrup is 100% natural with no preservatives, artificial colours or flavours. The brew uses only water, star anise, dry red chilli and jaggery.

Can I serve it without the spiced brew?

Yes. Orange Mint syrup with soda and ice makes a simpler serve. The brew is what gives this version its warmth and chilli finish.
